Bunong Tribe Community

Discover our community and our mission

Our Mission

The mission is to improve the living conditions of the bunang community, allowing them to educate their children, support their schooling, and develop their knowledge. we also aim to preserve bunang culture, including traditional weddings, the language, and to pass on cultural knowledge from the elders to the younger generation by practicing it continuously.

All the funds collected through this project will be used for the entire bunang community: to improve school facilities, provide furniture, donate clothes to those in need, and more. sharing this project with others you meet can also make a big difference.

In the future, we want children to have the opportunity to attend school for as long as they wish, without having to choose between farming and education.

How it starts

The project began when Sochea, after several years working in elephant trekking projects, grew frustrated with earning only $8 per day while others profited significantly more by using the Bunong name. Seeking a fairer way to share income with those who have genuine knowledge of the elephants, local land, and traditions, Sochea established the Bunong Tribe Community.

Bunong People

The Bunoung are an indigenous group in Cambodia who have traditionally lived in valleys, growing rice and other crops. They have preserved their own unique culture and language over generations. Historically, the Bunoung relied on agriculture, gathering vegetables and honey, and practiced animism.

While they no longer hunt as in the past, they still fish using traditional techniques such as nets and hooks. The Bunoung also raise various livestock including cows, buffaloes, cats, dogs, chickens, and pigs. Some animals are bred for food, and buffaloes and pigs are commonly given as wedding gifts.

Bunong People

The bunong people once had a lot of land belonging to the whole community, but they are losing space because khmer-owned land is expanding more and more every day. this project aims to protect and improve the living conditions of the bunong community by supporting them with land issues and by sharing resources with them.

As new technologies are developing very quickly, the bunong people often feel lost and are easily scammed. as a result, they sometimes lose their money, houses, or land through deception. they are vulnerable to these traps because of their limited knowledge about technology.

Only about 10% of the bunong population hold government jobs such as nurses, police officers, soldiers, or village chiefs. the remaining 90% are farmers.
